February 2020 Net Worth

Every month I post my updated net worth for those that are interested in following my progress. I have been tracking my net worth online since January 2006. I enjoy compiling the numbers each month, and doing so keeps me motivated, focused, and accountable.

Remember when I was a millionaire for two months? That was fun.

  1. Hey I’m a college student who has recently discovered your site. I’ve looked over your earlier net worth posts and I see that they include a checking account and also liabilities. Does your current net worth posts include those calculations?
I am also curious about your rental category. Is that the value of the rentals listed and does it include the passive income generated off of it?
This website is very helpful for my journey into financial independence. I thank you for it and if you have any unique insights please feel free to share them with me.

  2. Hi Michael,

I do have a checking account, but I stopped including it in my net worth calculations because I tend to keep it low and it’s just more of a temporary account for moving funds around. If there is excess money in there it gets moved to an investment account.

The only liabilities I have are mortgages. So, while I don’t show them specifically, they are included in the net worth calculation as I am only showing any equity in the real estate. All of the real estate values that I am showing are the value of the property minus any amount I owe on them. If I had a home worth $100,000 and a mortgage of $50,000 then my net worth would reflect $50,000 of equity.

The rental category likewise includes only equity in the properties, not any passive income that they generate.

    Thanks
